Graham said, "JAGUAR WAS ONE OF MY SHIPS AND AFTER 2 HOURS IN THE WATER I WAS RESCUED BY FISHING A BOAT AND LANDED AT TOBRUK, ONLY 40 OF US SURVIVED."


HISTORY OF ‘J’ AND ‘K’ CLASS DESTROYERS"

SAME DESIGN, 260 OFFICERS AND MEN, 7TH AND 14TH FLOTILLA BASED AT MALTA AND ALEXANDRIA, EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN FLEET. EACH SHIP HAD; 3 TWIN 4.7 GUNS, 14" H.A GUN, 14 BARREL POM POM, SEVERAL 2.5 SMALL ARMS, 5- 21" TORPEDO TUBES, TWIN DEPTH CHARGE THROWERS AND RACK SYSTEM (80 DEPTH CHARGES IN ALL)

HMS SPARTAN

THIS WAS COMMANDED BY CAPTAIN P.V MCLAUGHLIN RIN AND AS AN OBSERVER ADMIRAL FROLOV USSR AT THE ANZIO LANDINGS. BRITISH CRUISERS INCLUDED ORION, DEHLI, DIDO 8 FLEET DESTROYERS 4 HUNT CLASS. COMMANDED BY REAR ADMIRAL J.M MANSFIELD RN. THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN SHIPS WHERE UNDER SUPREME COMMAND OF ADMIRAL F.J. LOWRY U.S.N.

ON 21.1.44 WHILST ANCHORED OFF THE BEACH SHIPS SPARTAN, JERVIS, JANUS AND HOSPITAL SHIP ST DAVID WHERE SUNK BY RADIO CONTROLLED BOMBS WITH HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. AFTER THESE LOSSES, F.J. LOWRY U.S.N.ORDERED SHIPS AWAY FROM BEACH DUSK UNTIL DAWN.

I WAS AN L.T.O. THEN AND WAS RESCUED BY H.M.S. INGLEFIELD AND 3 DAYS LATER JOINED THE REST OF THE SURVIVORS ON R.M.S. WINCHESTER CASTLE (TROOPSHIP) IN NAPLES. WE ALL EXPECTED TO RETURN TO UK BUT HAD TO RE COMMISION H.M.S. AURORA (CRUISER) IN MALTA WHO HAD NO CREW AFTER HAVING MAJOR REPAIRS COMPLETED AND TO CARRY ON THE WAR IN THE MED.

DETAILS: 4 TURRETS TWIN 5.25 HA/LA GUNS 2*8 BARRELL POM POMS, SEVERAL 2.5 POWER OPPERATED GUNS, 2 SETS OF 21" TORPEDOES SPARTAN WAS THE LATEST IN SHIP DESIGN AND FIRE POWER.
